Even though Alan Wake has been out for over two years, I still feel the need to point out the AWESOMENESS of this song.
Don’t let the high production values fool you, this was written explicitly for the game. Not only does it refer to Alan Wake plot points, it serves as a backdrop to one of the coolest horde battles I’ve ever experienced.
The in-game universe refers to the song as being written by a washed up (and slightly deranged) progressive rock group known as “The Old Gods Of Asgard”. In reality, the song was done by Finnish hard rock band Poets of the Fall. I felt they captured the essence of late 60’s / early 70’s prog-rock (Rush, Traffic, Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis, et al…) perfectly, while still injecting enough modern rock elements to remain relevant.
Ditto the above point, for a guitarists point of view. I’ve played guitar for over twenty years, and my earliest influences were 70’s Brit hard rock (Led Zep, The Who, et al…) and I can tell you that from a musical perspective this song nails it. The chord changes, chord shapes, all reminiscent of 70’s proggressive and hard rock. Bullseye.
